MIDI Devices

Showglo offers support for external MIDI controllers for hands on control. This allows you to expand your hardware setup by incorporating one or more MIDI devices.

MIDI Settings

Device Types

Showglo provides two MIDI device types:

  • Controller Device: The “Controller” device type is designed for MIDI controllers that do not have a piano style keyboard layout. A controller can be configured to assign hardware controls to various Showglo parameters.

  • Keyboard Device: The “Keyboard” device type automatically maps playback buttons to keyboard keys which is useful for setting up piano style MIDI controllers. This type also supports the assignment of hardware controls to various Showglo parameters.

Default Keyboard Mappings

For keyboard devices, the default key mappings start with playback 1 on MIDI note 48 (C3). Here’s a table outlining MIDI notes used for each playback:

The MIDI Device Editor

The MIDI device editor allows you to assign various controls to Showglo parameters. It is shown when adding or editing a MIDI device in your show file.

MIDI Device Editor

Follow the steps below to edit an existing MIDI device:

  1. Go to Settings > MIDI Devices.
  2. Locate the MIDI device you want to edit and click the Edit button.
  3. Make desired edits using the control mapping editor.
  4. Click Done to return to the MIDI Devices list.

Name The Device

Use the name field in the MIDI device editor to make your MIDI device easily identifiable.

Set The Device’s Input and Output

Select the input and output device using the dropdown menus in the MIDI device editor. This will associate the connected MIDI device with the device in the editor.

Add A Control Mapping

Control mappings allow you to assign individual MIDI notes or control change (CC) parameters to Showglo controls.

To add a new control mapping, follow the steps below from the MIDI device editor:

  1. Click the Add In or Add Out button to launch the input or output menu.
  2. Click on the desired parameter from the menu to add it to the list.
  3. Configure the control mapping manually or use MIDI learn (described below).

Edit A Control Mapping

When a control is selected in the list, the mapping editor panel is displayed underneath. Follow the steps below to manually edit an existing control mapping from the MIDI device editor:

  1. Select the control from the list.
  2. Select the MIDI Channel using the dropdown (1 - 16).
  3. Select the message type (either Note or CC).
  4. Set the Note/CC Number (0 - 127).
  5. Set min and max values as required (maximum range is 0 - 127).

Use MIDI Learn To Map Controls

When editing a control mapping, you can use MIDI learn to quickly apply the correct settings using the following steps from the MIDI device editor:

  1. Ensure that your MIDI device is connected and set as the input device.
  2. Select the control from the list.
  3. Touch the control on your MIDI device.
  4. Check that the correct channel and note/CC information is populated in the learn field.
  5. Click apply to update the mapping with the learned values.

Remove A Control Mapping

To remove an existing control mapping, do the following in the MIDI device editor:

  1. Locate the control in the list.
  2. Click on the control’s Trash button.

Add a new MIDI Device

Follow these steps to add a new MIDI device to the device list:

  1. Ensure your MIDI device is connected and powered on.
  2. Go to Settings > MIDI Devices.
  3. Click Add Device.
  4. Choose either Add Controller or Add Keyboard.
  5. Enter a descriptive name for your device.
  6. Select the appropriate MIDI input and output from the dropdown menus.
  7. Configure controls as needed (refer to the “Edit a MIDI Device” section below).
  8. Click Done to return to the MIDI device list.

Import a MIDI Device

Importing a MIDI device configuration allows you to reuse existing control mappings rather than starting from scratch. Follow these steps to import a MIDI device configuration:

  1. Ensure your MIDI device is connected and powered on.
  2. Go to Settings > MIDI Devices.
  3. Click Add Device.
  4. Choose Import Device.
  5. Click the Browse button to locate the MIDI device configuration file on your computer, then click Select.
  6. Verify that the file has been loaded successfully, and click the Add button.
  7. Provide a descriptive name for the imported MIDI device.
  8. Select the correct MIDI input and output from the dropdown menus.
  9. Configure any additional controls or settings.
  10. Click Done to return to the MIDI Devices list.

Duplicate a MIDI Device

Duplicating a MIDI device allows you to create a copy of an existing device configuration. Follow these steps to duplicate a MIDI device:

  1. Go to Settings > MIDI Devices.
  2. Locate the MIDI device you want to duplicate in the list and click the Duplicate button.
  3. Provide a descriptive name for the duplicated MIDI device.
  4. Select the correct MIDI input and output from the dropdown menus.
  5. Configure any additional controls or settings if needed (refer to the “Edit a MIDI Device” section below).
  6. Click Done to return to the MIDI Devices list.

Export a MIDI Device

Exporting a MIDI device configuration allows you to save and share your device settings with others. Follow these steps to export a MIDI device:

  1. Go to Settings > MIDI Devices.
  2. Locate the MIDI device you want to export in the list and click the Export button.
  3. Select a directory to store the exported file and click Select.

Remove a MIDI Device

If you no longer need a MIDI device configuration, you can remove it from your show file. Follow these steps to remove a MIDI device:

  1. Go to Settings > MIDI Devices.
  2. Locate the MIDI device you want to remove in the list and click the Trash button.
